What we offer

This is a rapid-access online assessment for adults and children aged 10 and over with a recent, new hand fracture, including fractured fingers, thumbs, metacarpals and carpal bones.

A surgeon's assessment

A specialist plastic and reconstructive surgeon reviews your fracture and images and gives you a clear opinion.

Hand therapy referral

If needed, referral to an accredited hand therapist, a physiotherapist or occupational therapist with accredited hand therapy training.

How it works

1. Register online

Complete the online registration form. We need your referral details and where your x-rays were taken.

2. Book your appointment

Book via HotDoc, or wait to hear from us once we've received your registration form.

3. Attend by telehealth

Check in to the virtual clinic from your smartphone, tablet or computer at melbhandsurg.doxy.me.

What we need before your appointment

We need access to your X-ray images so Dr Tomlinson can assess your fracture. Please have ready:

  • ✓The name of your radiology provider (e.g. I-MED, Capital Radiology, Lake Imaging)
  • ✓Your name, exactly as recorded with the radiology provider
  • ✓Your date of birth

Original digital images are strongly preferred over a photo of a hospital screen, which helps us give accurate advice. We cannot proceed with your appointment until Dr Tomlinson can view your images.

What happens next

If surgery isn't needed

  • ✓A documented diagnosis
  • ✓Referral to a hand therapist near you, with splinting directions
  • ✓Advice and recommendations for ongoing management
  • ✓A medical certificate
  • ✓A referral for a follow-up x-ray after about six weeks of splinting
  • ✓Surgical assessment of that follow-up x-ray, with a letter to your GP, your hand therapist and you

If surgery is needed

  • ✓Referral to a public hospital outpatient clinic, or
  • ✓Surgery with Dr Jill Tomlinson at The Avenue (subject to availability), or
  • ✓Referral to your choice of hand surgeon or private hospital

Some fractures require carefully weighing the benefits and risks of surgery. We’ll explain these and guide you through next steps. Occasionally this needs a further or extended consultation.

For referrers

We welcome referrals from GPs, hospital EDs, urgent care centres, hand therapists, and self-referrals.

Not all of these referrals render the appointment eligible for a Medicare rebate.

Referrers please include:

  • ✓Patient details and contact information
  • ✓Date and mechanism of injury
  • ✓Radiology provider details
  • ✓Any clinical concerns
